art

Elizabeth Sher works with hybrid forms using her own photographic and video archive as source material: manipulating and combining these with drawing and painting on paper, canvas and metal, artist books and prints. Influenced by her work as a filmmaker/storyteller, the images offer glimpses into open ended narratives which invite the viewers participation. I work in series using media that seem most appropriate for the concept and content of the images. Sometimes I use digital programs and other times I prefer to work directly on the canvas or paper. The themes that have compelled me have evolved from more personal explorations to an embrace of global concerns. Committed to creating artwork not only as a means of achieving aesthetic ends, Sher sees it as a viable way of addressing social, political and environmental concerns. Often using humor as a catalyst, her work presents contemporary issues for discussion and debate accessible to a broad audience.
